About Me
Claudia Gohn is an independent journalist, filmmaker, and researcher based in New York City and Virginia. After graduating from Columbia University in 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Hispanic Studies, she began her career as a Post-Baccalaureate Fellow at Barnard College's Media Center. In that role, Claudia managed the production studio, developed creative workshops, and contributed to social media strategies, alongside other administrative responsibilities.
During her fellowship, she began a Master of Science program at Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism, where her reporting focused on housing, disability, advocacy, and the Arab and Cameroonian immigrant communities in New York. Her thesis is an intimate portrait of the experiences of Palestinians with epilepsy during Israel’s recent assault on Gaza. During her schooling, Claudia reported on the historic Columbia University pro-Palestine encampment protests, and her writing was published in outlets including Rolling Stone and Revista Contexto. For The News Movement, she produced a documentary about the encampment and police raids. The following summer, she began a small digital publication focusing on grassroots movements in New York City. Claudia graduated in 2025 after earning honors in International Newsroom.
Since her fellowship concluded in September 2024, Claudia has worked as a Multimedia and Video Producer at Barnard. She has also worked as a Teaching Assistant for several Barnard documentary film courses. Across the street, Claudia is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Journalism at Columbia University’s Journalism School, working in the documentary program.
As a journalist and documentary filmmaker, Claudia’s reporting focuses on social movements, labor, and conflict. She is a freelance video reporter for The News Movement and Waging Nonviolence, and writes for West Side Rag and Mondoweiss. Claudia also has bylines in Al Jazeera English, C-VILLE Weekly, SwimSwam, and more. She has worked on several feature documentaries, including France’s Children (2025), which is about Islamophobia and anti-Black racism in France, and March Forth (upcoming), detailing the impact of youth incarceration. She has also directed several short films, including Tenant Advocacy: Then and Now, which exposes where support is directed in New York’s housing rights advocacy movement.
Claudia is a freelance researcher, and works as a Research Assistant for Sloan Manor Consulting, which took her to Somalia in September for a project researching the impacts of Soviet assistance and training for Somali security forces and the personal experiences of those who underwent Soviet education and military training. She has also worked as a contract researcher for the Committee to Protect Journalists.
Claudia is committed to unveiling human rights violations and humanitarian issues while maintaining respect and dignity for those affected. She hopes to continue covering stories that make people feel heard, combat misinformation, and drive positive change.
